The service from a young waitress has been excellent and we round off with two coffees. Although the two of us were nearing defeat, we still opted to share dessert and ordered the Lemon Tartlet (€6.90). Beautifully presented, the tartlet was accompanied by Pistachio Dust, Vanilla Cream and a Blueberry Compote, and it was quite the sight. It had such a delicious filling that was silky smooth, creamy, sweet but not overkill and had a great zing of lemon – just what you want when ordering a citrus pudding. To start our dining experience, we were each offered the Beer Tray by Jack Smyth Stouts & Ales (€6.90) that includes a taster of the Stout, Gold Ale and Red Ale.

I get a large bowl of naturally smoked haddock, perched on a good portion of champ with a poached egg on top of it all. The fish is pale and tasty, simmered according to the menu, in milk and onions. The egg gives it a nice homely flavour and the champ is great.

The restaurant was packed, clearly a local favourite and a dream of a spot for those looking to indulge in traditional Irish pub fare. Critic's cupcakes Ever dreamed of jacking in the desk job and making cupcakes for a living? In the interests of research I'm doing just that (for one week only). My chocolate cup cakes will be available from today at Itsa Bagel's new cafe in Ranelagh and Terenure's Union Square cafe, deli and interiors shop.

This time he ordered the Gaelic Boxty, which was a potato pancake topped with steak and musrooms. I particularly enjoyed the corned beef Boxty, which is not currently on the menu. For mains, I always go with something corned beef based at Gallaghers. Because corned beef is not easy to find in Ireland, and Gallaghers always has it on the menu! Yes, surprise, surprise, the corned beef-Irish association is more of an Irish-American thing.

So it’s a meal that feels like going undercover in touristland to see what “traditional Irish restaurant” food we’re missing. There were complimentary textures, and the black peppercorns infused in the sauce also gave a good kick of spice, which was quite the contrast with the house salad on the side.

Is an award-winning lifestyle site created by Toronto-based writer and photographer Andrew John Virtue Dobson. Launched in 2006 as a culinary tourism diary, Andrew’s informative and entertaining food and travel stories documented his three-year trip around the globe. Boxty House was the brainchild of Padraic Og Gallagher, a native of Mohill, County Leitrim.

It was as conspicuous as it was forbidding, visible from the couple’s house on nearby Hillside Avenue. “This lot was in pure view—every morning, every night,” Carlotta Stahl recalled. Locals called it Pecker Point, presumably because it was a prime makeout venue. For the Stahls, it became the blank screen on which they projected their dreams of a life together, a place to build a future, a family, and a house like no other.

Restaurant Review: Gallagher’s Boxty House, Dublin, Ireland

It was a comfortable distance from boxty’s origins, the word comes from arán bocht tí or poor house bread. One account of boxty tells of a time when households were too poor to own a grater. Instead they punched holes into a hollowed half tin can and using the razor sharp edges to grate the spuds into the mix for pan (thicker soda bread) or griddle (pancake) boxty. Therefore it’s very intriguing that this Dublin restaurant not only wants to invite the public to discover Irish cuisine, but also to embrace the Irish staple, the humble potato.

We have a vast selection of whiskey from our local distillery, Teeling’s to Jameson in Co Dublin to Redbreast and Midleton from Co Cork. We are sure you will find an Irish spirit to satisfy your taste from our selection.

I last ate there about 20 years ago and have happy memories of rib-sticking food. THERE IS A SPEAKER mounted in the doorway of Gallagher’s Boxty House in Dublin’s Temple Bar playing diddly-eye tunes out into the chilly evening air. The restaurant has a green-painted front and red and gold lettering in that hunched Celtic typeface where the letters look like they grew up in a turf smoke-filled cottage. It all combines to render Gallagher’s virtually invisible to the local gaze, a “tourists’ only” place as the Elephant and Castle next door packs them in. Gallagher’s Boxty House offers a large drink list, which is surprisingly devoid of Guinness! We tried a stout on our food tour, and I ordered a cocktail at dinner.

While working in Venezuela in the early 1980’s, Padraic Og observed the Syrians that he worked with practicing their native home-cooking, preparing pittas and koftas. It reminded him of home-cooked food that his mother used to prepare when he was a child, particularly Boxty. He vowed that when he returned to Ireland he would set up his own restaurant and share his favourite food with the people of Dublin and its visitors. True to his word, Gallaghers Boxty House was incorporated in 1988, and opened its doors at Number 20, Temple Bar in February 1989. Desserts are fine, a slab of bread and butter pudding with a super-sweet custard on the side and a toffee sauce. Two disks of meringue with a Hennessy brandy cream sauce do what they promise and elevate blood sugars to brave the night outside.

These expertly crafted beers hail from Gallagher’s Boxty House’s own brewery and their kitchens in Tallaght, Dublin, to deliver strong flavours that differentiate from your typical pint. Each of the beers were strong and heady, but also very tasty. The menu at Gallagher’s is on the small side, but as long as you eat potatoes, you should be able to find something. It seemed a bit smaller this time, likely due to Covid.

Renowned for our celebration of Irish Cuisine, we are also very proud to present you with an array of beverages brewed and distilled in Ireland and expertly mixed by our bar tenders. “When I built in steel, what you saw was what you got,” the plain-spoken Koenig once said. What Buck and Carlotta Stahl got when they drove up to Woods Drive in 1954 was more than they ever envisioned. “They simply built their dream home,” their children write.

In that very moment I realized how essential restaurants such as Gallaghers Boxty House are. These institutions continue a dying tradition, a lost art, a celebration of peasant food, local flavours and inspire us to keep in touch with the historical dishes that have sustained a nation. Educating locals and visitors one mouth watering bite at a time. After studying the menu a few minutes, I opted for the Boxty Tasting Slate (€12) as my starter, which featured three different type of boxty specialities. The first of these included two slices of toasted Boxty Bread, topped with St. Tola’s Goat Cheese and cherry tomato.

Made up of cabbage, carrots, red onion, and golden sultanas sitting atop dressed salad leaves, it gave a sharp, acidic and distinctive addition to the dish. Overall, this main course was truly delicious and rather unique, and I would happily order it again. Irish beef is renowned, and this cut was reflective of our nation’s high quality meats.

One pro of the menu (and this is common in Ireland generally), allergins are clearly listed on the menu. Though there were generous shavings of the Irish goat cheese, I found the flavour quite subtle, and enjoyed how it melted with the heat of the vegetables. I do think this a great option for those who don’t include meat in their diet, but also if you’re in the mood for something lighter.

Gallaghers Boxty House Restaurant in Dublin

Ordering the Gaelic Boxty (€22), this main course featured medallions of Irish Fillet Beef within the pancake. The chef delivered on cooking the beef to my liking, medium rare, smothered in creamy mushroom and peppercorn sauce. I must admit that I love that this sauce was a combination of the two classics usually served with steak – easily better than having to choose between the two. The stout had a slight chocolate hint to it, the gold ale was more refreshing with a subtle fruity taste to it, and the red ale had caramel notes that reflect its deep caramel hue. Of the three I would say the Gold Ale is my favourite, which also complimented the boxty fries below.

Kerb Foxrock – A Casual Eating Experience Centred Around Sharing Great Food & Drink With Friends & Family

In the middle of my starter slate was a bucket of delightfully crispy Boxty Fries, served with a rocket and garlic dip on the side. We all know and love chips, but once you’ve had a taste of these boxty fries you’ll think twice about the traditional French fries. Plentiful and crisp, they were very well-flavoured with olive oil and salt – so there’s no need to add any extra, and that is always a plus. The accompanying aïoli was truly perfect, with rocket to compliment that strong garlic punch. Gallagher’s Boxty House is an established Dublin restaurant located right in the middle of touristy Temple Bar. Despite this, Gallagher’s Boxty House is no tourist trap.

Takeaway review: The samosas are a real standout at India eatery beside Dublin mosque

Dan and I first ate here a decade ago and continue to return on every trip. Gallagher’s Boxty House specializes in the potato and almost all of its dishes are potato based. As the name implies, Gallagher’s also specializes in the Irish boxty, or a potato pancake.

thoughts on “Restaurant Review: Gallagher’s Boxty House, Dublin, Ireland”

In any case, I love corned beef so I usually order it whenever I see it on a menu, at home or abroad. The dumplings are similar to Italian gnocchi and were served with corned beef cubes in a mustard sauce. The most popular version of the dish is made with grated raw potato, cooked mashed potato, and flour, made into a batter with fresh milk and slow-cooked in a pan until golden brown. Back then it seemed a clever idea to turn boxty, a thick floppy pancake made with grated potato, into a latter-day tortilla. The pancakes were filled with a choice of cream-laden mixtures and served to hungry hoards.

The twist (because let's face it cupcakes are everywhere) is that these are free from refined sugar. They're baked using agave syrup, raw cacao and topped with a maple syrup chocolate ganache. The project is the final chapter in a book called Thirty Given Days Someday Dreams into Everyday Life, which will be published this summer. Proceeds from the cupcakes will go to the Bone Marrow for Leukemia Trust, St James's Hospital. Gallagher’s Boxty House is doing what many home cooks do, a version of Irish food with added Italian touches. As a mid-range night out you could do worse than dig out an anorak and come into the parlour.

Shulman’s famous seven-minute exposure captures the house and its sprawling city backdrop. DOBBERNATIONLOVES is an award-winning lifestyle site created by Toronto-based writer and photographer Andrew John Virtue Dobson. It was the eve before my morning departure and after a rather overindulgent early afternoon at The Four Seasons and essential napping stint I was back on my feet. Amiee and I strolled along the cobblestone’s to Temple Bar and swung open the door to Gallaghers Boxty House.

It’s always wonderful to know that in Ireland we are blessed with excellent produce, of which we are very proud when dining out at home but also when abroad. What’s even better is how many restaurants across the Emerald Isle use only the best, often local ingredients that’s then well reflected on their menu and on the plate too. Slowly add 3/4 milk to form a batter of pouring consistency. Depending on the potato, you may not need to use all the milk. Alongside our amazing menu you will find the perfect beverage to accompany your meal.

Great in flavour by itself, the meat fell apart with ease and really brought the whole dish together. I had not yet tried boxty with beef before, and wouldn’t have thought of putting a pancake with fillet beef but this really worked. My guest decided on a vegetarian option to start, and ordered the Irish Mozzarella Salad (€7.50). On arrival, I was very impressed with the colour presented on the plate, with vibrant mixed fresh tomatoes topped with toasted pine nuts.

Set up by chef Pádraic Óg Gallagher, Gallagher’s Boxty House delivers traditional Irish food that teaches the diner more about the origins of traditional boxty, a potato pancake. “The Humble Spud Made Beautiful” is the ethos of this restaurant, which uses natural ingredients from artisan food producers in Ireland. As we took flight, I stared out the window and waved salut to The Emerald Isle.

Yet again there are roasted cherry tomatoes in this dish, as if the chef can’t resist a pull towards Mediterranean cooking. My friend’s chicken and ham boxty is very good, a real plate of comfort eating, the filling smothered in a creamy leek sauce and wrapped in the heavy folds of a potato pancake. I selected two boxty off the menu, a traditional pancake with corned beef and cabbage as well as an indulgent boxty dumpling in a blue cheese and portobello cream. We finished off the meal with a hearty trio of Irish stews served with butter slathered soda bread.

The Irish Toonsbridge mozzarella was very creamy but it worked well with the accompanying basil dressing and salad leaves. And the nuts added a good crunch and contrasting texture to the dish, that overall was light and a refreshing start to my meal at Gallagher’s Boxty House. Similar to gnocchi, these were rather addictive and I shamelessly devoured the whole portion.

Boxty pancakes are best left overnight in a fridge and reheated in a pan in good butter. Drop a ladle full onto an oiled non-stick pan over medium heat and cook on the first side for 2 minutes (depends on how heavy the batter is and how much you use). Check color (should be a nice golden color) on the bottom.

I didn't like the 2 hour delay and then mechanical issue once we were on board. Overall, the flight was better than the flight I took to go to Florida, which had a bunch of problems. Thirty-nine Democrats had voted “no” on Friday on the rule to allow the foreign aid package to come to the House floor, a target that progressives just missed on Saturday on the Israel bill. Fourteen of those Democrats voted on Saturday in favor of aid to Israel, while 12 Democrats who voted to allow the package on the floor on Friday then cast votes against the funding itself.
